Good evening, Reno! This is Jessica Carter reporting live from our studio here in Reno. Tonight we’re joined by Scott Morris, a renowned IT specialist with Reno Computer Services (RCS). Scott, thanks for joining us.
“Happy to be here, Jessica.”
Cyber Security
Jessica: Scott, many small business owners I speak to seem overwhelmed by the idea of cybersecurity. What are some of the biggest threats they should be aware of?
Scott: You’re right, Jessica, it can feel daunting. Ordinarily, people think of massive data breaches when they hear “cybersecurity,” but small businesses face everyday threats too. Phishing emails designed to steal login credentials are incredibly common. Ransomware attacks, where hackers lock your files and demand payment to unlock them, are another serious danger.
I remember one instance with a local bakery here in Reno. They fell victim to a phishing scam, and the hacker gained access to their bank account information. It was a nightmare for them – thankfully, we were able to help them recover most of their losses, but it was a stressful experience.
Data Security
Consequently, data security is paramount. Notwithstanding strong passwords and anti-virus software, businesses need multi-layered protection. This includes things like employee training on recognizing phishing attempts and regular system updates to patch vulnerabilities.
Moreover, encryption can protect sensitive data even if a breach occurs. A study by the Ponemon Institute found that 68% of organizations experienced at least one phishing attack in the past year (Ponemon Institute, “2022 State of Phishing Report”).
Backup And Disaster Recovery Solution
Jessica: So what happens if a business does get hit with ransomware or suffers data loss?
Scott: That’s where a robust backup and disaster recovery solution is crucial. It allows you to restore your data in case of an attack, hardware failure, or natural disaster.
I once worked with a local bookstore that lost their entire inventory database due to a hard drive crash. They didn’t have backups. It took them months to rebuild everything from scratch. Having a reliable backup system would have saved them a lot of time and heartache.
Accordingly, I always recommend businesses implement a 3-2-1 backup strategy: three copies of your data, on two different media types (like hard drives and cloud storage), with one copy stored offsite.
Jessica: Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us tonight, Scott. This has been incredibly insightful.
Scott: My pleasure, Jessica. If any Reno business owners need help navigating the complex world of IT security, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Reno Computer Services. We’re here to empower small businesses in our community.
